Chunks of Ice Separated in Greenland

Giant iceberg, amounting to 260 square kilometers away from the glaciers of Greenland, the researchers said U.S. universities. Chunks of ice break away from the Petermann Glacier in Greenland's northwest coast. This is the largest Arctic ice shelf that broke out since 1962, said Professor Andreas Muenchow of the University of Delaware.

Es possible freeze in winter or split between Greenland and Canada. If the chunk of ice moving south, may interfere with the cruise, said Prof. Muenchow. Crack in the Petermann Glacier had seen years ago and is expected chunk of ice will soon break away. This glacier was a thousand miles south of the North Pole.

Ice Agency Canadian researchers look at the separation from NASA satellite images of Thursday morning, the professor said. Picture shows the Petermann Glacier lost about a quarter of a layer of ice floating along the 70 km. There is enough water in the ice island "to meet the water needs of Americans for 120 days," said Muenchow.

He said it is unclear whether this is happening because of global warming. First six months of 2010 was the warmest period on record, scientists said. Thousands of icebergs broke away from the glaciers of Greenland every year, but rarely in size this big.
